Transformation of small retail trade in Post-Soviet Cities

Уважаемые коллеги!

В рамках юбилейной конференции географического факультета ТНУ "География: вызовы XXI века" состоится круглый стол "Transformation of small retail trade in Post-Soviet Cities". Приглашаем всех заинтересованных принять участие в работе круглого стола. Круглый стол будет проходить на правах секции конференции.

With disintegration of socialist economy in the beginning of 1990s the citizens of post-soviet states needed to find individual solutions for income generation. Participation in small trade, local open-markets, setting up small shops or enterprises became some of the key solutions for the urban population, facing socio-economic challenges. Participation in small trade often involved delicate maneuvering between formal/ informal legal/ illegal activities.  The main questions this roundtable intends to discuss are: how this initial response to insecurity was transformed over time together with changing institutional settings in different Post-Soviet countries? Did the small trade, initially used for survival purposes turn into productive entrepreneurship? Or did the governmental visions on modernization of the cities and entry of big businesses into retail trade markets drive out the smaller players?

We welcome the contributions that offer empirical or theoretical accounts on the following (and related topics) are welcome:
•    State’s modernization agenda and change of small scale urban economic practices
•    Transformation of the open markets (bazaars), its surroundings, and street vending sites
•    Usage of the public space for small trade
•    Diverse economies
•    Informality – problem or a solution
•    Informality during soviet period vs. Informality in post-soviet cities
•    Role of reciprocity, kinship and informal networks
•    Small trade and competition with big businesses
The participants of the roundtable are expected to make 15-20 minutes long presentation, where they will present research question, methodology, theoretical framework and the main findings of the research paper submitted to the conference; and actively contribute to roundtable discussion.

Your current web browser must be updated to version 7 of Internet Explorer (IE7) to take advantage of all of template's capabilities.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
